Song Bird & Wild Fowl Carvings

by Carol Turner

|| ARTIST'S PROFILE || HOME ||  CONTACT ME ||

Songbirds, water fowl, game birds and birds of prey are all carved to the minutest detail. Using tupelo and local basswood, the carvings evolve through multiple stages taking weeks to several months before completion. Wood carving is a relaxing and challenging art form that transforms a ‘wonder of nature’ into a collectable wood sculpture. Bird carvers have a passion for the perfection of their carvings and sculptures and we showcase annually at wood carving shows and exhibitions. Master carvers can only be applauded for the exquisite wood sculptures that continue to defy the impossible.

Allow me to tour you through my gallery of bird carvings and wood sculptures, many of which are for sale ….

  • Each carving is unique and carefully researched using observations from nature, books, photos, magazines before I begin work.
  • I use aged basswood or tupelo, and my tools include knives and rotary abrasive tools (Dermel and Fordum).
  • Working from a pallet of over 35 colours, I blend them to reproduce the colours found in nature.
  • Each mount is created to be as realistic as possible and represents an environment the bird would be found it.
  • Many carvings have 50 to 100 hours of work in them.

The following carvings are sold, but are examples of what could be yours. Click on each to see more detail.
